The Full Story
Our History
Prior to 1984, medical standby was provided by volunteers trained in first aid. This group, known as FAST (First Aid Station Team), included some EMT-certified members, but only first aid-level care was permitted. In 1984, some EMT-trained members of FAST broke away and formed a new non-profit organization to provide medical care at community events at the basic EMT level. In 1997, a new competing non-profit volunteer organization was created initially by Alan Loken. This organization disbanded a couple of years later. Loken, aiming to create a paid, professional medical standby organization, formed Team One, LLC in the fall of 2008. Team One started in Loken's garage with borrowed equipment and two employees. After five months of extensive training and planning, Team One began providing medical standby services. Today, Team One shares the medical standby niche in the Anchorage area with various organizations and individuals who volunteer or hire themselves out for occasional medical standby work. Various local fire departments also provide some medical standby services in their respective communities, especially when groups require an ambulance on location. The Anchorage area is growing quickly, with a relatively young population making sporting events popular. Races and runs occur almost every weekend during the summer, and many indoor sports take place throughout the year. The Mat-Su Valley is also rapidly developing, leading to an increased demand for medical standby and other medical services. Team One is a for-profit company owned by Alan Loken. Loken brings a diverse range of experiences and education to the company, including serving as Chief of a rural fire department, supervising a private ambulance service, participating as a member of a search and rescue team, and volunteering for various emergency services. He founded Team One as the culmination of his extensive academic and professional background. Team One is organized into three primary components: Medical Services Division: This division includes event standby, residential healthcare, medical response, and a phlebotomy unit. Retail Division: This division encompasses retail sales, custom kits, and the public relations unit. Education Division: This division offers EMS training, American Heart Association classes, a community education unit, and a Distance Education unit.
